How to Detox Your Body With These 8 Leafy Greens

We all know that leafy greens are good for our health. They are typically low in calories, low in fat, high in protein per calorie, high in dietary fiber, high in iron and calcium, and very high in other vitamins and minerals. But this time I would like to concentrate on their health benefits to detox your body. Detox is a subject close to my heart and I’ve already wrote about it several articles such as the 6 essentials of a successful detox program and 6 ways your body detoxifies itself. Detox has many benefits – improving the digestive process, increase stamina, energizing the body and much more. Detox program is not about fasting or starvation. For me detox brings up images of health, vitality and looking good – which are the reasons why so many of us try to carry it out. This article introduces leafy green vegetables that help detox your body and how you can incorporate them in your diet.

So help detox your body with these leafy greens:

1. Watercress

This is a good skin detox. It’s rich in sulfur, which aids protein absorption, blood purification, and cell building, and promotes healthy skin and hair. Add to freshly prepared smoothies to detox and boost clear skin.

2. Mustard Greens

The antioxidant beta-carotene and vitamins C and K help neutralize toxins and remove them from the body, providing effective detox support. Add raw to salads or smoothies.

3. Arugula

Sulphurous chemicals in arugula stimulate circulation, strengthen the liver, and have mild diuretic and laxative properties. Eat raw and fresh as arugula begins to lose its nutrients soon after picking.

4. Dandelion

Think about dandelion as a superfood rather than a weed. It can be used as a diuretic and liver cleanser. It helps clear inflammation and congestion of the liver and gallbladder. It’s also a natural source of potassium, which makes it a safe and gentle diuretic. Fresh or dried, all parts of the plant can be brewed into a refreshing tea that has diuretic properties.

5. Nettle

Another weed that is used to benefit the blood and treat urinary tract infections. It has diuretic effect and keeps water flowing through the kidneys and bladder, washing bacteria away. The iron content makes it a also a great blood builder. Steep fresh or dries nettles in hot water for 10-15 minutes for a detoxifying, diuretic tea.

6. Chicory

It is a natural diuretic and mildly laxative. As a good source of dietary fiber, it helps remove toxins from the blood and tissues. Add it raw and fresh to salads or smoothies, or fill the curved shape of the leaves with different toppings or stuffing made of rice and vegetables, and serve them as a finger food.

7. Cabbage

Is known to clear the blood and supports liver detoxification. It boost skin health. Its bitterness stimulates gastric juices to digest food more effectively, and it is also a mild diuretic. It is also fiber rich and promotes bowel regularity. The juice is especially good for the skin, or you can use it in salads, or use the leaves as wraps and fill in with rice, beans or vegetables.

8. Lettuce

Lettuce has diuretic effect, and its watery nature helps flush toxins from the body. Add fresh to salads or smoothies.
